Project Promotes Literacy
The “Little Free Library” project came into existence in 2009 when Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin placed a home-made wooden box on a pole in his front yard. Bol painted the box to look like a one-room schoolhouse. Todd built it in loving memory of his mother, a teacher and a reader. Inside were books–free for the taking. And so the movement began. The idea is simple: It’s a box of books placed in an accessible place like a yard or near a sidewalk. Everyone is welcome to stop and look. See something you like–take it. Have something to share–bring a book. There are currently 32,000 Little Free Library book exchanges across the 50 states and 70 countries….
Students at LCCTC became involved in this project when now-deceased Patricia Shedlock, Nu Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society (DKG.org) approached Mr. Eppley of the Woodworking class and asked if his students could take this on as a project. The goal was to build one for each school district in Lebanon County. Nu Chapter purchased a model library from www.littlefreelibrary.com and the students used it as a pattern to build four more. Mr. Hagy’s Commercial Art students decorated/painted the libraries. The students and teachers can feel successful as they helped to promote a sense of community and promote literacy throughout the county. Pat Shedlock is now deceased, but her legacy lives on. Great work, Mr. Eppley, Mr. Hagy, and students of LCCTC.
The location of the first one built is at the United Church of Christ, 200 South White Oak St, Annville, PA (across from the Annville Elementary School). Others are located at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 119 North 8th St., Lebanon, PA; Southwest Elementary School, 1500 Woodland St, Lebanon, PA; Northside Elementary School, 301 East Spruce St, Palmyra, PA; Zion United Methodist Church, 402 W Main St, Schaefferstown. PA; and Jonestown Community Park, Jonestown, PA.
